Conflict Resolution in the church…  Matthew 18:7,8,9,15-17    Luke 17:3-4

Some thoughts

1.      This is for the church and not the world
2.      This is for people who want reconciliation.
3.      Designed so wrong may be righted.
4.      This is so an erring one may be brought back to full fellowship of the Lord.
5.      Matthew 18:7              Stuff happens
6.      Matthew 18:8&9         Deal with the offense even if it hurts.
7.      Matthew 18:15            This is on a need to know basis
8.      Proverbs 25:18            We are not to gossip, slander and defame
9.      Galatians 6:9                Do not be weary in well doing
10.  Hebrews 10:30,31        Do not seek revenge.  Vengeance is mine.  I will repay, saith the Lord.
11.  Mathew 18:18             What we bind on earth will be bound in Heaven
12.  Mathew 18:20             Where 2 or 3 are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.
13.  1 Corinthians 6:1-8      Go before the saints and not before the world.

Some things are not worthy of Matthew  18

1.      Matthew 5:39                 Turn the other cheek
2.      1 Corinthians 6:7            Why do you not suffer the wrong?
3.      1 Corinthians 5:1-5        Example of sexual sin needs to be dealt with.

Who is to go?

1.      Matthew 18:15               The offended one…..  not his neighbor.
2.      Galatians 6:1                  One who is spiritual
3.      Galatians 5:22,23           One who shows Christian Character
4.      John 8:7                          One who is without sin.
5.      Matthew 7:3                   Why look at the speck in your brother’s eyes when you have a plank in your eye

In what attitude are we to go?

1.      Galatians 6:1                  In the spirit of meekness, considering yourself lest you be tempted.
2.      Matthew 18:15              Decently and in order.  The offended one go first and then if no good results go back and take a witness.  If no good results then take the erring one before the church.  This is all on a need to know basis.
3.      1 Corinthians 13:13       In the spirit of love.
4.      1 Peter 4:8                       Have fervent love among you.
5.      1 Peter 4:8                       Love shall cover a multitude of sins
6.      1 Peter 3:9                      Not rendering evil for evil
7.      Luke 10:33,34                With compassion.

10.  Galatians 6:7                  However we approach this, it WILL come back to us.  Sow and reap.

What are we asked to do?

1.      Matthew 18:21-35         Forgive 70x7 for the same offences on the same day.  The erring
one does not have to ask for forgiveness.
2.      Matthew 18:35               This is how my Heavenly Father will treat each of you.
3.      Matthew 10:16               Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
4.      Galatians 6:2                   Bear one another’s burdens
5.      Ephesians 4:31               Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you with all malice.  Forget????  Not necessarily, but we do need to have the emotions taken from the event.
6.       Hebrews 12:15              Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

What is the desired result?

1.      Galatians 6:1                  Restoration of the erring one.
2.      1 John 1:9                       Forgiveness for the erring one and cleansing from all unrighteousness.
3.      James 5:16                      Healing for the erring one and for all others
4.      1 Peter 4:8                      Fervent love among yourselves.
5.      Psalm 119:9                    Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?  By taking heed thereto according to thy word.  Instruction to the erring one to bring him into alignment with the Word Of God in his thoughts and behaviors.
6.      Ecclesiastes 5:5             When you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for He hath no pleasure in                                                 fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.  Provide accountability to the erring one.

What is the undesired result?

Matthew 18:17           The erring one refuses to hear and he is treated as a pagan of tax collector (Ex-Communication from the church.)  Can be restored later when the erring one repents.
